Preservative Dentistry

Preservative or conservative dentistry is a vital field of dentistry as it focuses on the treatment of dental defects, most often dental caries and/or post-traumatic defects. Its task is to remove all caries-infected mass while preserving as much hard dental tissue as possible. Subsequently, an aesthetically and functionally suitable filling and/or addition is made. Following a thorough examination, the dentist proposes possible options and determines an individual treatment and financial plan. Naturally, our primary concern is to provide you with gentle and painless care.

Complete Entrance Examination

A complete entrance examination is an essential part of any visit to the dentist. It embraces an overall examination of your teeth, both visual and with the aid of various modern diagnostic equipment, such as an intraoral camera or a panoramic digital X-ray, which allow to minimise the radiation dose. Based on the examination, the patient's health condition and individual characteristics, the dentist draws up an individual treatment plan, recommends the scope of treatment, and estimates the demandingness of the treatment in terms of finances and time.

Causes of Dental Caries

Dental caries is the most frequent defect of the hard dental tissue. Although caries has accompanied human kind since the beginning of human evolution, its major spreading may be attributed to the introduction of a diet rich in carbohydrates, i.e. the conversion from the hunter-gatherer to the farmer way of life. It is in fact tooth damage resulting from bacterial activity. Bacteria are physiologically present in the oral cavity. If the viscous deposit on the tooth surface, which is known as dental plaque, is not removed regularly, it is colonised by large concentrations of these bacteria. The products of the sugar metabolism of the bacteria, i.e. acids, subsequently cause the corrosion of the tooth enamel and they penetrate into the dentine where they form dental caries. Dental plaque may also mineralise and form dental tartar or calculus.

Importance of Prevention

Prevention is a vital part of dental care. Many people who are afraid of the dentist come only when they start experiencing some problems. Nevertheless, dental and periodontal diseases may be prevented effectively, painlessly and inexpensively by regular visits to the dentist and thorough home care, i.e. by brushing your teeth regularly and properly. Prevention is beyond any doubt a crucial aspect in modern dentistry. Most diseases of the soft and hard dental tissue may be easily avoided with the help of a dentist. Optimum prevention namely involves regular visits to your dentist, preferable once every 6 months. This way, you can protect your teeth from caries and its devastating consequences. During regular check-ups, the dentist can detect any undesirable changes to your teeth in time and spare you of any pain or even from tooth loss. Compared to a severely decayed tooth, a tooth with initial caries can be treated more easily. Obviously, self-motivation and regular oral hygiene play an inevitable role in dental care. At our Dental Centre, we will give you thorough advice on how to effectively care for your teeth.

Filling Types – Amalgam

Despite numerous disputes concerning its alleged toxicity, amalgam is a filling material that has been used in dentistry for almost 200 years. It should be noted that there is no relevant study that would unambiguously prove its harmfulness. In essence, amalgam is a compound of mercury with other metals, namely zinc and silver, which imparts to it an antibacterial effect. Amalgam fillings show immense mechanical and chemical durability, due to which it still bears up against modern composite filling materials. The disadvantage of amalgam fillings is their dark colour. This, however, is not as important when used on the back teeth, for which amalgam is primarily intended.

Filling Types – Composite ("White") Fillings

Composite fillings are of high aesthetic quality. The filling is matched to the colour and shape of your tooth. The use of composite fillings is primarily indicated for the front section of your teeth. Nonetheless, composite fillings are associated with several complications due to which the treatment is prolonged. Since the material has no antibacterial effect, excellent oral hygiene is necessary in order to achieve optimum results. Photo composite fillings are an ideal solution for small caries in the front section of your teeth. White fillings may be contraindicated in the back section, as well as on teeth prone to increased decay and in case of poor oral hygiene.

Endodontics

Endodontics is the treatment of dental caries complications, which namely involves the inflammation of the tooth pulp containing nerve fibres. Most frequently, the pulp is infiltrated by bacteria from advancing caries. The infected pulp has to be removed and the root canal needs to be cleaned. After cleaning, the root canal is filled with bioinert sealing material. A "dead" tooth treated in this manner may continue to fulfil its function in the oral cavity. We provide endodontic treatment with the aid of state-of-the-art instruments that minimise the risk of conceivable complications.
